Wrong-Way Driver Intentionally Strikes Cop Car During Capital Region Pursuit, Police Say

A 36-year-old man is facing charges following a wrong-way highway pursuit in the region in which he intentionally struck a cop car, authorities allege.

Daniel Hammon, of Albany, was arrested on a warrant Thursday, Oct. 19, in connection with the July 2023 incident on I-90 in Rensselaer County.

An Albany County Sheriff’s deputy was chasing Hammon on I-90 in East Greenbush on July 25, 2023, when a State Police trooper began assisting in the pursuit.

During the chase, Hammon drove the wrong way on I-90 and intentionally drove into a marked police car, according to State Police.

Nobody was injured in the crash, but the impact caused more than $10,000 in damage.

Hammon was eventually arrested by sheriff’s deputies and was held at the Albany County jail on separate charges. 

He was arraigned Thursday at the East Greenbush Town Court on the following counts:

  • Two counts of reckless endangerment
  • Criminal mischief
  • Attempted assault
